Depression
It seems that the majority of people classified with a mental disorder are diagnosed with depression. However, a much smaller percentage of people with depression realize that they are gifted in their way of thinking. Much of the attention given to the link between mood disorders and creativity has been focused on manic depression; however, there is also a very strong link between creativity and depression. Additionally, depression has a wide spectrum, and people with depression may in fact experience some unrecognized forms of mania.
A person with depression often has the ability to create very moving, very emotional work. He or she can have very complex emotions, which can have a lasting impact if channeled into creative work such as painting or sculpture. Writing in particular is a creative outlet that the depressed person ought to consider; it is therapeutic, and many writers with depression have gone on to produce outstanding, significant works.
It can be hard sometimes to remain motivated; during these times it is important to shift one's attention and try other creative activities.
